LAKE GARDA

Formed By Glaciers And Framed By The Alps, A Day Trip To The Beautiful Lake Garda

After a couple of months of solo travelling, doing a day trip somewhere fun with friends was amazing. We caught the train, then a bus, out to the little peninsula village of Sirmione on Lake Garda. The village itself is actually protected by a moated medieval fortress (which was very cool). We crossed the drawbridge and stepped inside the fortress walls to the old town, wove past groups of tourists and through statue-filled gardens, and found a spot on the grass by the lake for a picnic lunch. Aiden wanted a swim, so we walked further along to the rocks and the waterfront, and while he disappeared in search of rocks to jump from, Ethel and I sat in the sunshine and took in the view. This was also the first day of properly testing out my new Fujifilm, so half the fun (for me at least) was playing around with all the settings and presets.

Post-picnic coffee stop. None of us can resist a cafe with a view 🤩

Walking through the old town of Sirmione feels like walking through a movie set. It's a quaint kaleidoscope of colour and texture, with ivy vines creeping up earth-toned buildings (apparently growing a climbing vine on the doorstep of your home brings good luck), timber shutters framing juliet balconies and open windows, and little tile murals built into the walls. Side streets will open up every so often to a sliver of the lake, which was absolutely sparkling for us on this sunny day. We wandered through the town and over to the villa gardens where, much to my delight, stone archways were layered between olive and cypress trees for the most perfectly Italian snapshot.
