Budva's origins trace back over 2,500 years to a native Illyrian settlement established by the Enchele tribe on the Adriatic coast. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of the Roman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian empires, though it's the Venetian centuries that left the deepest mark, with most of what still stands in the old town today built under their rule.
It's a compact maze of narrow stone alleys, defensive ramparts, residential palazzos built from local limestone, and an abundance of churches opening out onto piazzas. Walk in any direction long enough and you'll emerge suddenly from the imposing city walls to views of turquoise water.
First things, first. Coffee. We stumbled upon a super cute cafe, tucked away in a quiet corner of the Old Town and offering a reprieve from the other bustling streets. Find it here.
We got chatting to the lovely gentleman that owns the cafe as he made our coffees. He's not normally on the coffee machine and was practicing his skills in prep for the approaching peak summer season, so he was appreciative of our assurances that they were, indeed, fabulous iced coffees.
To start our Big Day Of Adventures, we zipped over the hill from Tivat to Budva and were treated to the most breathtaking ocean views as we wound our way along the coastline.
